Goodyear was a company town for most of the last century, cotton fields owned by a tire maker, and it kept that quiet until the I-10 opened the West Valley and the subdivisions came. Palm Valley arrived first, built around lakes on the old fields. PebbleCreek followed for the retirees, with golf on every side. Estrella went up the mountain south of the Gila, on rock and fill, with its own lakes at the bottom. Then the grid south of the freeway filled in, subdivision by subdivision, through the 2000s. Most of it is copper under slab now old enough to start pinholing, and all of it sits on ground that was either irrigated farmland or blasted hillside, neither of which holds still.
